For as many people at work give me crap about the blue lanterns, I took photographic evidence of where people’s alliances run. We just got two bags each of the repreinted Brightest Day / Darkest Night rings, and the first two colors to go? Blue & Green.
Just sayin’. *wink*
Keep the hope strong everyone, and thank you for everyone who has been supporting the project by getting thier first issue mailed to them. I’m already working on a cool incentive item for the second issue. When I have a pool of ideas, I’ll put up another poll and see what everyone is thinking.
The first issue is finally back from the printers, and all packaged up and looking pretty! Just as a spoiler. The first printing is a limited run, and includes a blue foil cover. The incentive items for each issue are only available for that specific issue, and will change for each issue.
I’m so happy that we were finally able to get the first issue out, and a huge thanks to everyone who submitted items. Remember: one of the perks of submitting stuff to the fanzine is that you get a free issue of the fanzine that your stuff is printed it!
Above is the first draft of the first issue. It ended up being around 20 pages or so, and I’m finalizing the cover design right now (plus, I didn’t want to spoil it at all. :3) I am hoping to get the Blue Lantern Fanzine Issue #1 out by the end of July 2014. It may end up being a little bit longer than it currently is right now depending on how much I have to add into it. There will be rotating incentive items with each issue as a thank you for paying for shipping. Each months item will be secret, so you’ll have to grab an issue to find out what it is!
I also have a theme for Issue #2 already due to some of the content I’ve gathered over the last year: DIY Fantern projects like Cookies, Logo T-shirts, & more!
As of now, I am opening up pre-orders for issue #1. This zine is intended to be a print-only, low-fi version so at the immediate time it is free, but shipping (North America) will be $1.50, $2.00USD worldwide. Thank you all again for your submissions and your patience while we get this together.
So, this website has been down for about a year. Largely it was because I couldn’t get enough people to submit anything to the fanzine despite coaxing and throwing in bonus items and free issue(s)for people who submitted stuff.
I’ve decided I’m fine doing it on my own if I have to. This is my project, this is my goal. I’d love for people to take part in it, but if they don’t want to I totally understand. It’s only an extra kick in the butt that within the last 6 months they’ve effectively tried to fold the BLC down to one surviving member, Saint Walker. (I won’t spoil it for people on how this occurred, but it occurred.)
The page is up, and you’re welcome to peruse or submit your own content to appear in the zine. When I have the first issue available I will put up information about it here. People who submit things to the zine will get it for free, everyone else will get it for $1.50 (To include postage since this will be a paper ‘zine, not a digital one.)
So, I’m here to make the post that basically says I don’t think the August deadline was met since I have not received any new submissions since my last post. This means as of now, I do not have enough material to make a zine out of. I’m pretty bummed about this, and I’ve been putting off making a post about it because I didn’t want it to straddle the gap between too whiny or too aggressive, of which neither is helpful.
For now, I’m keeping submissions open indefinitely until we have enough to make a zine with. I know people are busy, and I know people are working on other projects; I am hoping this is the reason that things have slowed down. I have about 8 pages worth of content right now, and 15$ in the community donation pool that two very generous fans have given me for supplies. I have faith that this will become realized before the end of 2012, so I will continue to keep it open for people’s comments and suggestions.
Please keep this project in mind. I was so excited when everyone initially showed up for support.
I’d like to open up another public poll with just quick question about those interested in issue #1 (although anyone can take the poll if they’d like! ) I’m still very into the idea of including a gift with each issue, and I’d like to get an idea of what people would like. This could also be something we open up to the public to help create art for, so keep that in mind for people who haven’t found anything they’d like to submit yet. I’m wanting to get a feel for what people are interested in early so that when August comes and I sit down for a few days to compile everything into a useable format that I wont be rushing the issue’s gift bonus until the last gasping second.
If you’d like to suggest other options that aren’t on the poll, you can always holler at me on DA or you can leave a message with this post!
This is just another quick update, as well as opening another option to send me things for the fanzine since I still have not received any new submissions.
As of now, I have 5 submissions from people who aren’t me, and those are from only 3 different people. All together, they will cover about 8 pages of content, assuming I can stretch them out. Again, I’m coming at you guys with all of my honesty: I can’t do this project on my own. I can’t. I need your help filling out this zine project, and I swear to you on my honor that if you just hang in there with me and take the 2 minutes of your day to shoot me some of your fan content to put into this, I will make it worth your while. I will wow the fuck out of you, and you’ll wow the fuck out of yourself and other BLC fans too. But I need you to submit stuff. If I end up putting in the content for a fanzine that is 90% my own stuff, I can guarantee you that you’re gonna have a bad time.
I’ve talked about it with my brother a little bit, and as best I can figure, I sort of came out of no where so I have a feeling people are like “Who the fuck…? Why would I help her?” I’m trying to help the image of ‘small but strong’ with the BLC fan community. I need you to help me make that an actual truth. In the vein of Saint Walker, I hope you’ll put a little trust in me to make something really cool for y’all.
If you feel more comfortable sending me content on my DA page, please give me a visit and send me a note. I know that people aren’t always comfortable sending letters to someone they don’t know, so I’m hoping it’s just a case of cold feet. (I’m curious why people are afraid of sending an email — is it the taking out all of the numbers from my email address that is getting people? I can’t tell. You do not need to make an account to comment on this webpage. I’m hoping that will help push up the feedback a little bit more. The only thing you have to have is a working email (to weed out spambots. I can’t even see it unless you let me).)
I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that a little bit more stuff comes in before August. I have faith in you guys and your creativity!
A prototype for a possible screenprint / stencil shirt tutorial. The black ink I used was a little too old, so the consistency is sort of muckier than I’d like. (I ended up doing a second shirt with newer ink that turned out much better. :D)
So, as you may have seen, there is now a Downloads & Freebies section that is a little barren as of now. As i get permission / make / get links to stuff you can use to quench your fan needs, i’ll put stuff into the section. So, again, if you have anything that you’d like to submit to either the zine or as a free online download (Desktops, Q-Head paper dolls, Windows themes, icons, etc), make sure to visit the Submit Material page and let us all in!
For those people who visit my personal site, you may know that I have a love for printmaking and dabble a little bit in screenprinting on the side. That being said, I know not everyone has the time or room to invest in screenprinting privately. However, there is a lot of pretty easy ways to convert this into a cardstock stencil project, so I’m going to see what I can get ready. I’m going to shoot to have this in issue #1. This way, you don’t have to pay 20$ + S&H for the shirts on amazon.com.
I’m still pretty light on submission from people for the zine. I have about 3 pages of fan material, and another 6 pages of stuff I can use as material from my own arsenal, but I’m hoping to have at least 16~20 pages an issue, so we still really really need stuff from you guys. My deadline for this stuff is going to be the first week of August, so that gives everyone around a month and a half to submit stuff. After that if we don’t have enough stuff to work with,… I dunno. I’ll burn that bridge when I get to it.
Alrighty. I think I have everything back to where it needs to be. You may notice that the Registration + Log-in are not available at the time. When the site crashed, the entire folder got deleted so for the few people that signed up, all of their information was erased. Luckily, I had saved all of the submissions so far to my HD, so we’re good on stuff already sent.
I’m working on re-integrating an upload/file exchange system for ease of submitting things, but I’m going to look around for a really solidly made system, which means that for now you’ll have to send me files to my email address. All of the new submissions info is in the Submit Material tab.
I swear I’m not usually this useless at website maintaining. *laughs* It’s been a hellavuh’ month.
Also, I still need the information for the person who submitted this to the zine. I have no contact or information about it’s creator, and I don’t want to throw it in the zine if I can’t properly credit you for it!
